Tavon Austin has more than his share of critics due to his giant contract, and at 10.5 million a season, it would look good on Coach Sean McCoy’s behalf if Austin could at least be a significant part of the Rams’ burgeoning offense. He’s making #1 wide receiver money, but clearly has not been the top receiver on the team.
Clearly in possession of the physical tools that facilitated his standout career in college at West Virginia, he has been managing to carve out a niche for himself, both in the Rams’ rushing attack and hauling in his share of passes. Sunday, against the Giants at MetLife Stadium, Tavon rushed 6 times for 34 yards, and had 9 yards through the air off a rare hook-and-lateral play in the first quarter.
He also has provided some support for his teammates behind the numbers, drawing defenders off of Todd Gurley in the backfield, thanks to sweeps and fake handoffs.
